Water managed by Durness Limestone Lochs & River Fishing
Loch Croispol lies below Balnakeil craft village in the low ground near the coast, less than 400 metres from the sea. This small loch covers roughly 12 hectares and stretches just under 700 metres in length. Set on marl geology, the water is remarkably clear, revealing the weed beds and bolt holes of the trout from a boat.
The loch holds free-rising brown trout, with most fish running between half and three-quarters of a pound. While this is the most prolific of the four Durness limestone lochs, the clear water and visible weed beds make it a demanding water to fish. Boat fishing is definitely the most effective method, though bank fishing is also possible from the sheltered shoreline.
The loch is reached by the road leading to Balnakeil Bay. Its beautiful setting and smaller, willing fish make it an excellent choice for beginners to the limestone lochs of the far north-west.
