Lochan Carn Thearlaich is a very small, very shallow lochan lying close to the Argyll coast, barely a mile and a half from the sea. It covers less than a hectare, with a roughly oval outline of low complexity, and sits in low ground typical of this part of Argyll and Bute. The fetch across the water is short — the lochan is well sheltered, and even a modest breeze will raise little disturbance on the surface.
A large spread of lily pads occupies much of the central water, giving the lochan a distinctive character. The traditional wet fly patterns will take fish here, but a sinking line worked with a mini lure around the edges of the lily beds is worth trying — the results can be a pleasant surprise.
